Places to Visit
The Metropolitan Park
The Metropolitan Park is the biggest Chile‘s park. It has total superficies of 728 hectares and includes the San Cristóbal, the Chacarillas, the Gemelos and the Pirámide hills.
The statue of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, 14 meters high, stands at the summit of the San Crsitóbal hill. There are some other different attractions available there: the Zoo, two swimming pools, a picnic zone, restaurants, children play ground zone, a chapel and the Botanical Garden. This area can be easily reached by car, cable car or funicular.
The National Zoo is situate in part of Santiago Metropolitan Park. Currently there are 158 species and about a thousand animals in the area of 4.8 hectares. Approximately 30% of them are indigenous, such as condors, vicuna (a type of camel), chinchillas and cougars (South American feline). You can get there using bus, or a car o surface trail or walk by the Barrio Bellavista from the subway station of Santiago called Baquedano.
Forestall Park
It is a peaceful and very beautiful park planted with leafy trees and is pleasant to go for a walk.
The Sculptures Park
The park offers amples of sculptures in open air of famous national and international art prize winners. The sculptures are made from metal, wood, fibers and other materials. There is also a show room permanently functioning.
Plaza de Armas
A fortified area, for gunpowder storage, was built in its center by the Spaniards. There, they also carried out military exercises. That is why it was called Plaza de Armas or the Arms plaza. This area is very popular among foreing and local visitors. Maybe the main reason of such popularity is the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago standing here on the Plaza des Armas. Its baroque interior features 3 long naves with barrel vaulting and there is some fine decoration, most notably the main altar of marble, bronze and lapis lazuli that came from Germany.
